Best of Steamboat Springs: FREE Family Fun Events

SKI Magazine readers have recognized Steamboat Springs as the #1 family resort in the West for several years in a row. The down-home genuine friendliness, the Kleenex at lift lines, and helpful ski resort employees are not the only reasons Steamboat deserves this reputation. Throughout the summer, Steamboat's event's calendar is packed with FREE family events sure to please little and big kids alike.
Here are ResortQuest's recommended FREE family summer events:
- FREE! May 22-25, 2009: Yampa River Festival
The Yampa River Festival has been a locally produced and sponsored event, held every spring, since 1981. River Festival Events include the Downriver Race, Salmon Slalom (Colorado's only upstream slalom!), Crazy River Dog Contest, River Gumbo Dinner, Silent Auction, and an incredible Kayak Rodeo that features world class competitors from around the US and the world.
- FREE! June 6, 2009: Touch-A-Truck - 10:00am-1:00pm Touch a Truck is a FREE community event for everyone. Come down to Howelsen Park from 10 am to 1 pm to see a variety of trucks and vehicles on display including fire trucks, busses , dump trucks, four wheelers and even a zamboni! Kids are welcome to check out the trucks up close, sit in the driver’s seat and even honk the horns. This event will go on rain or shine!
- FREE! June 20, 2009: Free Steamboat Family Fun Fest
A Free Family Fun Fest is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Colorado Mountain College.
Enjoy an entire day of music, entertainment, ridesand activities... all completely free! Activities include ResortQuest’s Bouncy House, Velcro Wall, a 25-foot Giant Slide and Robo Surfer! Let’s not forget face painting, balloon animals and cowboy on stilts!Even Sponge Bob Squarepants, SHREK, Scooby Doo and several colorful clowns will be joining the celebrations.
- FREE! Every Thursday starting June 25: Free Music on the Green
Strings music festival presents the Meridian Quartet at 12:15pm at the Yampa River Botanical Park.
Bring a blanket, a picnic lunch and your family - stretch out on the lawn, enjoy the gardens and great music.
- FREE! June 27 - August 20, 2009: Free Steamboat Summer Concerts at Howelsen Hill
For over 16 years the City of Steamboat Springs has brought top national acts as part of its Free Summer Concert Series. There's no better price or place for a concert in the summertime. Recent artists include: Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Little Feat, John Hiatt, North Mississippi Allstars, Steel Pulse, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Keb Mo and the String Cheese Incident among others.

For over 100 years, Steamboat has celebrated Independence Day with rodeo - Cowboys Roundup Days celebrates the Western Heritage native to the Yampa Valley with events for the entire family including:
- Community All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast - 6:00-10:00am
- Children's Activities and Concerts
- 4th of July Parade down Lincoln Avenue - 10:00am
- Block Party at the Tread of Pioneers Museum (Free Concert) - 11:30am

- FREE! July 11-12, 2009 - Annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and 35th Annual Art in the Park
Steamboat's most colorful weekend! The Steamboat Springs Hot Air Balloon Rodeo weekend is a festival of vibrant colors and art - one of the most anticipated weekends of the summer! Join us for this spectacular early morning affair with over 40 hot air balloons rising softly from the mist and drifting over the valley, and then pedal down the Yampa trail to the renowned Art In The Park.

- This annual arts & crafts fair is held in West Lincoln Park during Rainbow Weekend. Over 140 artisans offer unique, hand-crafted items made from wood, metal, clay, leather, fiber and glass PLUS fine art, jewelry, sculpture, photography and more!
- FREE! October 31st, 2009: Downtown Halloween Stroll - 5:00-7:00pm
Dress up in your favorite costume and join Steamboat in celebrating Halloween! Trick-or-treating will take place on Lincoln Avenue, downtown Steamboat Springs.

- $10 FOR KIDS! July 5th, July 9th, July 16th, and July 23, 2009: Cow Town Ranch Tours - 1:00-4:30pm
Visit local working ranches and tour our cultural countryside with local historians. Learn about the rich ranching heritage of Routt County and its residents, with hands-on experiences. Each tour will be different, determined by the location and your tour guides, and may include stops at cattle, sheep, horse, bison and elk ranches throughout the County. Transportation will be provided by Alpine Taxi. $50 for adults, $10 for kids 7-12, free for kids 0-6 - fee includes transportation, guides, information materials and Routt-Beer floats. Advance registration is required - please contact our concierge.
- $7 FOR KIDS! Weekends, June 19-August 22, 2009: Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series
Watch the old west come alive! The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series features the best cowboys in Colorado and Wyoming on the baddest bulls and horses. Kids events too. All rodeos start at 7:30 p.m. except the 4th of July rodeo which starts at 7:00 p.m. Enjoy a BBQ and entertainment beginning each night at 6pm. All rodeos are at the Romick Arena in downtown Steamboat Springs. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children. Kids 6 and under are free.
- From $2/RIDE FOR KIDS! May 23-September 20, 2009: Steamboat's Alpine Slide
Ride a chairlift up Howelsen Hill and then jump on a cart and zoom down a track that winds through the pine trees! Tickets are $8.50/ride for a single ticket or $8.00/ride for a 4-9 ride card or $7.00/ride for a 10-24 ride card. A 25-ride card is $150 and may be shared. Children must be 7 years or older to ride a cart by themselves and children 2-6 years must ride with their parent. Children 2-6 years old cost $2/ride. Children under 2 years old are not permitted on the slide.

The Old Town Hot Springs has recently undergone a major renovation. This summer, get a twister of a slippery ride shooting through the waterslides - enjoy two brand new 230 foot water slides! Plus soak your cares away in the newly remodeled hot mineral pools, ranging from 98 to 103 degrees. Waterslide prices: Unlimited use per day per person $12.00; 10 rides ( transferrable) $ 8.00; 5 rides ( transferrable) $ 5.00; 1 ride $1.00
- $1 FOR KIDS! July 1-August 19, 2008: Strings in the Mountains Music Festival
The Strings Music Festival has Youth and Family Concerts the whole family will enjoy! Tickets are only $10 for adults, and $1 for each child. The brand new Strings Music Pavilion is conveniently located off of Mt. Werner Road.
- From $12/Day! Starting in July: Tube the Steamboat Springs Yampa River
Splash down in an innertube and float your summer cares away on Steamboat’s Yampa River. Tubing on the Yampa River usually begins around the first week of July. Tubes are $$12-$15/Day. Price includes a life jacket and a shuttle back up river.
